Requirements

The free version of DaVinci Resolve does not support scripting API features like GrabStill(). Therefore, the export of thumbnails is not supported in the free Version of Resolve.

  • Python 3.7+
  • Python libraries: openpyxl, Pillow, tkinter
  • Paid version of DaVinci Resolve Studio, if you want to use the thumbnail export.

I. Installation

  1. Download the latest version of the plugin from EditingTools.io.
  2. Make sure to close DaVinci Resolve before installing the plugin.
  3. Copy the .py file called "Codebook_Generator" into the plugin folder:
    macOS: /Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/Fusion/Scripts/Edit/ Windows: C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\Fusion\Scripts\Edit\
  4. Restart DaVinci Resolve.
  5. Open a project in DaVinci Resolve Studio. Go to Workspace > Scripts > Edit > DB_Codebook_Generator.
  6. If dependencies are missing: pip install openpyxl Pillow

II. Create the first spreadsheet

  1. Open the film sequence in Resolve you want to export.
  2. Launch the script: Workspace > Scripts > Edit > DB_Codebook_Generator.
  3. Check all metadata fields you want to export.
  4. Set your image preferences.
  5. Press "Generate" to export a sheet.
  6. The script creates a subfolder named after your timeline/project and exports a .xlsx.
  7. Avoid switching pages while the script runs.

FAQ

1. Close DaVinci Resolve.
2. Copy the '.py' file into the Scripts folder (see paths above).
3. Restart DaVinci Resolve.

Go to Workspace > Scripts > Edit > DB_Codebook_Generator...

Close and then reopen the panel. This should reload the plugin. If that doesn't work, try restarting DaVinci Resolve or reinstalling the latest version.
